We took an incline tram up to the top of Penang Hill. The British started constructing this in the late 1800's. The purpose was to have a haven high in the hills, away from the hot and steamy weather. However, their steam driven equipment didn't work upon completion. Finally, in 1923, they completed the tram system using cables. Men still walk the track with buckets of grease, lubricating the braided steel cable by hand to keep things running smoothly. The original wooden cars were used until 1974, when they were replaced by the cars in service today.
Look at the pitch of the roof, remembering that the floors are level. There are 4 sections to the car. Up to 18 or so people are packed into each section. All but 4 are standing. On a hot, sweaty afternoon, it is not a pleasant environment. 2 small fans in the ceiling of each section, but no A/C.
