Batik is decorated material that is the same on one side as it is on the other. The 'pattern' is designed and a barrier line of wax is applied along the pencil lines to prevent the colors from crossing over into each other. It ends up kind of being paint by numbers, but with dye. Once the dyes are set, the fabric is washed in really hot water to disolve and remove the wax.
